Decorative Curtain Rods
Decorative curtain rods are made in a variety of different
materials and styles. Wooden rods are very decorative but they are a little heavy and require strong bases to hold
them to the wall. Care must be taken if you will be hanging heavy drapes on wooden rods, as they can easily be
broken.
Aluminum is another material used. It is very light and durable
and is also made with many different designs. The rods are striped or plain but the real decoration is made on the
finishes where you can let your imagination run. Roman styles are available, Phoenician, Greek, you name it can be
bought.
It is important that when you are trying to buy curtain rods
for a specific room in your home you have a general idea of what you want the room to look like. If the curtains
are going to have flowers and spring tones you do not want dark or black rods to kill the light effect. Heavy
curtains look good on thick rods with large decorative finishes, the material they are made of is not really
important; they should look like they can hold the curtain and more.
Thin translucent curtains look good on thin simple rods,
without too much flare. Many of the finishes used today look like they someday decorated rococo palaces in France.
Decoration today tends to me simpler and with not too much load on the windows and curtains. To be able to use
those huge extremely exotic and decorative curtains you would need to have huge windows and two story walls around
them so they could be appreciated.
Some of these decorative rods have double tracks on their bases
so you can have two curtains on the same window. The rod closest to the window is used for a thin translucent
curtain often a light tan, white or light pastel color. These curtains are always closed; the light comes through
them into the room. The second track that is farthest from the window is used for a heavier curtain that should not
close the window completely, because it is for decorative use only.
A combination like this could look great in your sitting room
or living room. Simple decorative rods can be used in the kitchen and bathrooms, most anywhere in the house. These
rods do not have strings to pull the curtains automatically or from the side, the whole curtain must be pushed
manually to the place you want on the rod.
Decorative curtain rods are part of the complete ensemble of a
room in your house, the order in which to decorate a room depends on if you have or don’t have the furniture for
it. If you do, the next thing to do is paint the room to match the furniture, the furniture is placed in the room
and the decorative curtain rods are chosen. Once the curtain rods are in place, the curtains must be picked to
match the furniture, wall paint and curtain rods. Sound easy right?
